Absence surrounds me
hangs over my head
creeps up my stairs
and slides in my bed
where it plagues my mind
and torments my soul
leaving me empty
with nothing to hold
so I struggle and fight
to make sense of it all
but I am afraid
that I am much too small

In the year 2000 I contracted the flu virus for the first time in my life and spent an entire week in bed. Oddly enough, it was also the first year that I had ever gotten an immunization shot for the flu. While bedridden and feeling helpless I wrote the following verses. I've never taken another flu shot since that dreadful week and have never shown symptoms of the flu again.
